An in depth look into Heroes 3 Movement, overview of Artifacts, skills, terrain and adventure map objects that you can use to your advantage

Movement is affected by many factors – for starters, every Hero commences the game with a certain number of movement points that is the same for every Hero. All Heroes from all towns have the same amount of movement points, regardless of their class or alignment. However, some of them may have this as a secondary skill. Their movement points may differ significantly from those without it, so some Heroes can have the advantage over others right from the beginning. These points are consumed for every step the Hero makes and are shown in the bottom line when a Hero is highlighted, plus they are represented by the green meter left of the Hero’s image.

Unused movement points can’t be transferred to the next day, nor can they be transferred to another Hero. When a new day starts, the movement points are simply replenished, so there are no benefits to ending a turn with lots of movement points left. The game itself will notify you that one or more of your Heroes can still move.

Special thanks to Tg Games whose video made this guide possible.

Factors That Affect Movement

One of the main factors is the speed of creatures in your army. The speed of the slowest unit in your army will determine the final movement points. All Heroes start with 2000 movement points. Units with speed of 10 or below reduce the available movement points, as shown in the table:

Movement Table

Adding creatures to your army may actually reduce your movement points – in a best case scenario, the movement points will not be affected by the creatures

Note that dismissing a slow creature will not give you more movement points straight away. Changes in movement points are applied the next day. You can use this feature strategically – for instance, if there is a possibility, before ending your turn, you can leave your forces (in towns, garrisons, etc.) and keep the fastest unit only. Then in your next turn you may take your units again and you will have more movement points.

Secondary Skills Affecting Movement Points

There are two secondary skills that affect a Hero’s movement – Logistics and Pathfinding. Logistics increases your movement points, while Pathfinding decreases movement penalty. Logistics is generally considered one of the best secondary skills in the game and is mostly picked when available.

There are six Heroes in the game who start with Logistics as a secondary skill, and three of them have Logistics as a specialty:

Pathfinding reduces the movement penalty certain terrains have. It can be very useful, but also useless, if there is no rugged terrain on the map.

There are also Heroes who start with Pathfinding as a secondary skill:

Terrain Types

There are 8 types of terrains (10 in HotA) and each town has a native terrain. This means that Heroes with creatures native to these terrains will not face penalties when moving through them:

The native terrain also increases the speed of those creatures by +1 in battles

Heroes with creatures as a specialty will provide them with +1 speed which will also be counted as added movement points. Also, having at least one Nomad in your army will cancel the penalty on Sand terrain.

Roads will increase your movement points, as they give you bonus movement on rugged terrains:

Artifacts That Affect Movement Points

There are two popular artifacts that will increase Hero’s movement points - Equestrian's Gloves and Boots of Speed. Artifacts that add speed to creatures will not affect movement in the adventure map.

In the Horn of the Abyss version of the game, another movement artifact is added:

Wayfarer's Boots

Wayfarer's Boots have the same effect as Expert Pathfinding and, unlike the other movement artifacts, Wayfarer's Boots will have an effect immediately.

Structures That Affect Movement Points

Stables can be found in the adventure map or they can be built in Castle towns. You will get +400 movement points for the rest of the week by visiting it. Combining this structure with Advanced Earth Magic and Town portal spell can give you great benefits:

Adventure Map Objects

There are a number of Adventure map objects that affect your movement:

Digging will require all movement points and it doesn’t matter how many movement points you have, digging consumes all of them. Another specific feature is Fly – it will not add to your movement points nor will it consume more of them, but it will also be affected by rough terrains. However, having Expert Fly cancels all rugged terrains penalty.
